Join the Campaign to Save Illinois Libraries
In response to the recent cuts to system funding and library grants, the Illinois library community has launched a campaign to secure the future of Illinois libraries. To send an e-mail in support of libraries to your legislators go to ILA's CapWiz at http://capwiz.com/ala/il/state/main/?state=IL . You can check on the campaign's progress and find out what you can do to help by going to http://www.saveillinoislibraries.com/
Registration is open for the MLS Annual School Librarians’ Holiday Program, Friday, December 4, 2009, 1:30 – 4:30, MLS Burr Ridge. The event will create a “Snowball Effect” by bringing together School and Youth Service Public library staff to meet, share ideas, and collaborate towards potential partnerships. Attendees will engage in a dialogue around forming and maintaining relationships within their own public/school library districts, and hear from a panel of elementary, high school, and public librarians with established successful partnerships. Refreshments and networking with vendors will also take place. Space is limited thus libraries are asked to limit to one staff member. YS library staff register at http://www.librarylearning.info/events/?eventID=7690 and School library staff register at http://www.librarylearning.info/events/?eventID=7691 . Questions contact Christina Stoll at stollc@mls.lib.il.us .
The Plinkit Collaborative has upgraded their software for small libraries. The new release has a number of improvements, the most popular being the ability to create and manage “recurring events.” With the upgrade complete, the five organizations that joined the collaborative this year will start launching new sites, greatly increasing the number of small libraries with a web presence and library customers with online access to library catalogs and databases, as well as features such as slide shows, videos and event calendars. For more information see "Feature enhancements in this release" at http://plone.org/products/plone/releases/3.0 or contact your Plinkit provider.

Library Law: Sexual Predators and Library Internet Services
In an effort to make it more difficult for convicted sex offenders to use the Internet to connect with previous or new victims, the Illinois General Assembly has passed two new laws that implicate public use of libraries' computers and Internet service. The first law, effective last January 1, 2009, creates a new Class 4 felony, criminalizing the offense of "grooming." The other law, which will become effective on January 1, 2010, prohibits convicted sex offenders from using so-called "social networking websites".
