On Monday, October 19, 2009, the Board of Directors of the Metropolitan Library System, and the Board of LIMRiCC will meet. The LIMRiCC meeting will convene at 3:00 p.m., the MLS Board meeting immediately following. Meeting agendas can be found at http://www.mls.lib.il.us/board. Both meetings will be held at the MLS Chicago office located at 224 S. Michigan Ave, Chicago, Illinois.
Due to changes in staff duties resulting from recent budget cuts, MLS will no longer have a phone receptionist to answer calls coming into (630) 734-5000. We will check voicemail daily and make sure we get back to you in a timely manner. Specific staff members may be reached at their extensions, which can be found on the MLS Staff directory at http://www.mls.lib.il.us/staff.
A reminder that School Library Members need to complete their School Per Capita (http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/library/what_we_do/schoolpercapgrant.html) and their MLS School Annual Report (http://www.mls.lib.il.us/SchoolAnnualReport2010.asp) by Friday November 20, 2009. One person from each district or private school needs to complete each survey in order to receive the grant money and retain system membership. Questions or assistance contact Christina Stoll at stollc@mls.lib.il.us.
Per the September 21, 2009 MLS Board vote to revise the MLS Plan of Service, MLS will no longer reimburse libraries for materials “Lost in Transit” or “Damaged in Delivery.” Effective immediately, members are encouraged to perform the standard LIT follow-up by checking their shelves and calling other libraries. If an item is not found on shelf at either location, route a copy of the report on to MLS Resource Sharing. SWAN staff will continue to produce the “Lost in Transit” report, and MLS Resource Sharing staff will continue to review all the LIT reports, identifying any trends that might warrant attention. Questions, contact Kate Boyle at boylek@mls.lib.il.us.
Shop for a Cause on October 17th to support Museum Adventure Pass! The Museum Adventure Pass program (http://www.museumadventure.org) is off to a roaring start! Systems are hearing great responses from libraries and patrons on the success of the program. Help the program continue for a second year by supporting the Macys’ Shop for a Cause by instructing your patrons and staff to go to a local Macy’s store now through Saturday, October 17, and buy a $5 Shop for a Cause coupon. Proceeds go to the Museum program, and the coupon offers discounts that can be used on the Shop for a Cause day, October 17, 2009. Questions contact Gretel Stock-Kupperman at stockg@mls.lib.il.us.

Social Networking: Sharing Knowledge is Power
“It isn’t who you know, but who you share what you know with.” The groundswell of libraries and library professionals engaged in social networking is largely attributed to the maturation of the toolset. The real opportunity comes in our ability to leverage these tools, and the connections they enable, into meaningful dialogue, knowledge growth and exchange, and personal and organizational development.
