On Monday, April 20, 2009, the Board of Directors of the Metropolitan Library System, and the Board of LIMRiCC will meet. The LIMRiCC meeting will convene at 5:30 p.m., the MLS Board meeting immediately following. Meeting agendas can be found at http://www.mls.lib.il.us/board. Both meetings will be held at the MLS Burr Ridge Office located at 125 Tower Drive, Burr Ridge, Illinois 60527

Don't Forget to Vote! Online voting for the MLS Board of Trustees will begin on Wednesday, April 15, 2009. Ballots can be found on the MLS website at http://www.mls.lib.il.us/board/elections . Deadline for submission of completed electronic ballots is noon, Wednesday, June 10, 2009. Detailed information on the candidates can be found at http://www.mls.lib.il.us/board. Election results will be announced to the membership in the June 17, 2009 edition of E-nnounce.

Special and Academic MLS Libraries are asked to complete their Annual Report, which is a requirement of membership. The Special Library Annual Report can be completed at http://www.mls.lib.il.us/SpecialAnnualReport2009.asp, and the Academic Library Annual Report can be completed at http://www.mls.lib.il.us/AcademicAnnualReport2009.asp. Deadline for both is April 30, 2009. Questions, contact MLS Consultants at consultants@mls.lib.il.us.

MLS is looking for one member from each library type to serve on the 2009 MLS Awards Selection Committee. This committee, consisting of members, an MLS board member, and an MLS staff member, will coordinate the nomination process and select the winners, presented at the annual meeting. Diversity in Libraries

Semi Morales-Grady from the MLS Resource Sharing Department was asked to present a program for the Illinois State Library Diversity Program held on March 19 at the Lincoln Trails Library System. The program was called “Empowering Library Staff to meet the needs of Spanish Speakers in their Communities”. [Permalink]

Grants & Awards

NEH Preservation Assistance Grants for Smaller Institutions. Awards of up to $6000 support preservation related collection assessments, consultations, training and workshops, and institutional and collaborative disaster and emergency planning. Grants cover consultant fees, workshop registration fees, related travel and per diem expenses, and the costs of purchasing and shipping preservation supplies and equipment. Deadline is May 14, 2009. Library Law: How to Handle a Mechanic's Lien Claim

Libraries face many issues when they close out construction projects. The receipt of a lien claim is one such issue. When a contractor has a dispute with a subcontractor regarding payment for labor and/or material, a library may be served with a mechanic’s lien. This article provides an overview of the mechanic’s lien process and explains the necessary steps that a library must take if served with a notice of lien. [Permalink]

Member Spotlight: Chicago History Museum Research Center

The Chicago History Museum is the city’s oldest cultural institution. Researchers visiting their Research Center range from authors working on books to high schools students doing a history fair project, to a building owner researching a specific building.
