Announcements

On Monday, July 21, 2008, the Board of Directors of the Metropolitan Library System, and the Board of LIMRiCC will meet. The MLS Board meeting will convene at 5:30 p.m., the Board of LIMRiCC immediately following. Meeting agendas can be found at http://www.mls.lib.il.us/board. Both meetings will be held at the MLS Burr Ridge office located at 125 Tower Drive, Burr Ridge, Illinois.

Nominations for the 2008 MLS Awards are now open. The purpose of the MLS awards is to recognize MLS member libraries, trustees, MLS staff, and government officials for their contribution to libraries and/or the field of librarianship. The nine awards will be presented at the MLS Annual Meeting on October 8, 2008. For award descriptions and nomination instructions, visit http://www.mls.lib.il.us/members/awards.asp.

MLS invites all member library staff to give input on the MLS Strategic Plan by attending a focus group session. One session will be held for each library type, as well as three open meetings for any type to attend.

The Donors Forum is a great resource for libraries and non-profits who are seeking funding assistance. Their library (http://www.donorsforum.org/library/library.html), an MLS member, is customarily open to the public for in-house access to their resources. MLS is now a Forum Partner of the Donors Forum. Contact the MLS consulting department consultants@mls.lib.il.us with funding resource questions. The Donors Forum Library will be closed in July as they move to a new floor in their building.

ALA National Library Legislative Day 2008

National Library Legislative Day this year, which took place May 13 – 14, 2008, saw over 400 librarians, trustees, and library supporters ascend on the capital from libraries around the country. They brought their message of support for libraries, library legislation, and keeping libraries up front in the minds of our legislators.

Grants & Awards

The American Library Association (ALA) is now accepting applications for the 2009 class of Emerging Leaders. The program is designed to enable more than 100 new librarians to get on the fast track to ALA and professional leadership. Participants are given the opportunity to work on a variety of projects, network with peers and get an inside look into ALA structure and activities. The deadline is July 31. Technology: ISL and Library Systems Set to Launch State-wide Calendar

The Illinois State Library and the Illinois Regional Library Systems are preparing to launch a state-wide Events and Continuing Education Calendar later this year. The calendar, called Library Learning or L2 for short, will enhance the registration process for library members, and provide better use of state library resources at both the state library and library system level. SWAN MilCirc Users' Group Meeting

MLS Service: New Emergency Generator

The new SWAN Emergency Generator arrived at the MLS Burr Ridge office during the last full week of June. As part of MLS and SWAN’s emergency procedures, the generator, fueled by natural gas will provide emergency power for SWAN services, MLS Burr Ridge phones, and burglar alarm system.

Member Spotlight: Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust

The Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust, located in Oak Park, on the lower level of the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio, is comprised of over 1,100 reference collection items, 400 circulating collection items, and 15 special collections. The main focus of the collections in the Museum and the Research Center is the architectural and design legacy of Frank Lloyd Wright, and the context surrounding his work in the Chicago area.
