Public Library Funding and Technology Access Study

Libraries have always been about the business of connecting people with the information they want and need in order to learn, explore, create and build success. Computers and the Internet have been a growing part of fulfilling this mission. ALA’s Public Library Funding & Technology Access Study is part of a sustained effort to provide current information that describes access to computers, the Internet and Internet services in U.S. public libraries. The report provides information that can help library directors and IT staff benchmark and advocate for technology resources and is of importance to policymakers at all levels of government. MLS Member Spotlight: Blue Island Public Library

The staff at the Blue Island Public Library work hard to serve all of their patrons’ needs, including their community's third- and fourth-generation Hispanic population. For the past five years staff have attended the annual Guadalajara International Book Fair, in order to bring back materials from Spanish publishers, written in the native language of many of their tax-paying residents. The impact has been far more reaching than just collection development, to include an increase in the hire of Spanish speaking staff, Spanish programming, and the support of community wide culture events.
